Scarboro Surf Life Saving Club Life Member, Brian Hall completed his 1000th Polar Bear Swim at Scarborough Beach on Sunday 13 July 2025, marking a milestone 60 years in the making.

The Polar Bear Swim is a important winter tradition for Scarboro Surf Club, held at 10am every Sunday from April to September. It began in 1965, when club member Keith Brown envisioned a way to maintain camaraderie and connection among members during the colder months. His idea gave birth to the “Polar Bears,” a group of hardy swimmers who brave the brisk waters of the Indian Ocean each week, regardless of the weather.

For Brian, this ritual has become a way of life and he has been handicapper for the last 44 years. Sunday’s swim marked Brian’s 1000th official plunge into the winter surf — legend has it that the number should be another 100 or so higher but for missing records from the past.

Club members, family, friends, and supporters gathered to congratulate and cheer Brian on as he entered the surf for the 400 meter swim around the buoys, with some sizable waves rolling in. Hot showers and morning tea and coffee were enjoyed afterwards by all.

Scarboro Surf Life Saving Club President Clint McGhie praised Brian’s contribution to the club and Polar Bears. “Brian embodies the spirit of Scarboro — Polar Bears is an important part of the Club’s culture and Brian has fostered this over 60 years.  1,000 swims is a remarkable achievement”.
